She was born in Samsun. She was graduated from Chemical Engineering Department of Yıldız Teknik University in 1976. Her first children’s book My Kite is in the Clouds (Uçurtmam Bulut Şimdi, 1987) received the Children’s Literature Story Award given by Akademi Publishing House. She wrote scripts and stories for children’s programs broadcasted on TRT (Turkish Radio & Television). Her play “Tagging my Dreams” was staged by İstanbul City Theaters and the play adopted from her book The Rooster Man and The Pirate (Horoz Adam ve Korsan, 2008) was put on the stage by Ankara State Theaters. Being one of the most productive authors of our contemporary children’s literature, Sevim Ak has over 40 published children’s books. Her books also attracted attention abroad and were published in former-Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria, Germany, Korea and The Netherlands.  Ak was nominated for the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2009 and for Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2012. Between 2000 and 2007 she visited 160 boarding schools and 30 village schools all over Turkey, in collaboration with the NGO supporting these schools, and compiled her memories in a book titled Children of the Sun (Güneşin Çocukları, 2009). Two of her children’s books were published by Günışığı Kitaplığı: In Rainbow Summer (Gökkuşağı Yazı, 2016) she told the story of a girl who centered her life around her autistic sibling. And in her latest children’s novel Ada and The Man (Ada ve Adam, 2018) she told the story of a boy who feels like he is not the only one for his family after his baby sister was born. Ak writes her stories in a warm and humorous way. She lives in İstanbul.
